Getting them talking

What could be easier? We all speak, we all have conversations, we all say things. It must be easy then. Actually, writing dialogue can be very difficult because it is quite different from the language we use and hear ourselves. If you've ever listened carefully to the language of a conversation between friends, you'll have noticed how frequently they interrupt each other, leave sentences half finished, make noises, talk at the same time, and finish each others' sentences. None of that is acceptable in written dialogue because it would be difficult to read. So how do I go about writing dialogue?

Writing to a plan

Some writers like to plan and there's an element of planning in every short story. A rapidly produced free flowing first draft will have planning imposed on it when it's structured in redrafting. Some people like to create that planned structure in advance, and I've tried that approach too. This article explains what I do when I decide to plan a story in advance. It's less spontaneous so sometimes it's less fun than seeing what your characters decide to do for themselves, but sometimes imposing those constraints gets them to act and react in a more convincing way giving a richer story.

Grammar does matter

I've heard it said that grammar doesn't really matter, that language is dynamic, fluid, and that usage changes, and that we shouldn't get hung up on misplaced apostrophes, split infinitives, wrong tenses, and the like.

I'm one of those people who gets very distracted if I spot some error in grammar when I'm reading text and that's not just irritating. It can spoil the enjoyment of an otherwise well-written piece of writing. Part of me is accommodating and I just assume that it was a slip of the pen or perhaps that the author didn't know about the grammar, or perhaps that it's an integral part of the author's style. But another part of me is far less forgiving.

Blitzing the first draft

As writers we all know what it's like to have an idea run dry just a few paragraphs in. It's infuriating and demoralising and often the idea is so strongly present in your mind, you just can't shift it and get going in a more productive direction.

I've tried numerous approaches and they all seem to have something to offer – there just is no right method. I'll try and outline what I do, what sometimes goes wrong with it, and what I try to do about the problems.

Self-publishing

Self-publishing gets a lot of bad press because it's seen to be an open expression of vanity with the barely suppressed assumption that you'd only publish something yourself if you couldn't get someone else to do it for you. But there are other very good reasons for considering self-publication.
